At Hello Moon, we believe that a garment you love is one you wear for a long time. When selecting a piece, we don't just look at its cut or color: we also attach great importance to its fabric, as it influences its comfort, drape, flexibility, warmth, and ease of care.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a “good” or “bad” material. Each fiber has its own qualities and ideal uses. In many cases, combining several materials is what creates the best balance of comfort, shape retention, and durability.

This guide brings together the main materials featured in our collections, their characteristics, and all our advice on washing, drying, ironing, and storing them in the best possible conditions. A well-cared-for garment is one you’ll be happy to wear season after season.

Why do fabrics completely change a garment?

Two garments may look similar at first glance yet feel completely different once worn. The reason is simple: the fabric. It influences how fluid it is, how well it holds its shape, how comfortable and warm it feels, and how much it weighs.

A few concepts can help you better understand these differences:

Drape: some fabrics (viscose) create soft lines that follow your movements, while others (cotton) provide more structure. Neither approach is better; it all depends on the style you are looking for.

Breathability: natural fibres (cotton, wool) allow good air circulation, while synthetic fibres offer other benefits such as durability and easy care, which is why combining them can be useful.

Comfort and warmth: some fibres feel soft against the skin or are more stretchy. Wool naturally insulates against the cold, cotton remains lightweight, and polyester makes everyday wear easier.

Durability over time: some fabrics stand up well to repeated washing, while others require more delicate care. This does not make them more fragile, simply different in terms of their needs.

Understanding care labels

The labels sewn inside garments contain all the information needed to care for them without risking damage. Following these instructions helps preserve colors, prevent shrinkage, maintain the softness of the fibers, and extend the garment’s lifespan.

Wash Basin

30°C, delicate fabrics and colors. 40°C, everyday use. Delicate or hand-wash cycle: fragile fibers
Square – Drying

Circle = tumble drying allowed. Otherwise, air-dry naturally, flat or on a hanger.
Iron - Ironing

A few good habits before every wash

Sort colors (light, dark, bright), turn garments inside out, fasten buttons and zippers, empty pockets, use a mesh bag for delicate items, and avoid overloading the drum.

🤍 Taking care of your clothes doesn’t take any extra time: choosing the right cycle, avoiding too high a temperature, or letting a delicate item air-dry is often enough to keep it in good condition over time.

The main types of fabrics

Not all textile fibers come from the same source. At Hello Moon, we take a simple approach: no material category is better than another; each has its place depending on the garment and the desired effect.

Natural fibers (cotton, wool, silk) come from plant or animal sources. They offer excellent breathability, but sometimes require a little more care when washing.

Man-made fibers, such as viscose, are made from processed plant cellulose. They offer a soft, fluid drape, but require gentle washing to preserve their shape.

Synthetic fibers (polyester, elastane) are created to improve durability, stretch, or ease of care. They are often combined with natural materials to bring together their respective qualities.

Processed natural materials (leather, suede, straw) are not textile fibers strictly speaking, but they play an important role in a wardrobe: leather for its durability and patina, suede for its velvety feel, and straw for summer accessories.

It is rare for a garment to be made from a single fiber: jeans with a touch of elastane are more comfortable, while a viscose dress blended with polyester wrinkles less. That is why it is always important to check the care label before choosing a washing method.

Polyester

Polyester is one of the most widely used materials in ready-to-wear clothing. Today’s fabrics are more supple than they used to be and offer different drapes depending on their weave. It is found in dresses, blouses, trousers, and jackets.

Why we love it: It withstands washing well, dries quickly, resists wrinkling, and retains its shape without requiring much maintenance: a versatile and practical material for everyday wear.
Things to keep in mind: As it is not very absorbent, it may be less comfortable than cotton or linen in very hot weather, and it remains sensitive to high ironing temperatures.
Care: Machine wash at 30°C on a normal or delicate cycle, with the garment turned inside out to preserve its colors. It dries quickly naturally, on a hanger or in the open air. A tumble dryer is only necessary if the care label allows it. Iron at a low temperature, preferably inside out.

Wool

Wool is a natural material that has been appreciated for centuries for its warmth, softness, and comfort. Sourced from the fleece of various animals, it has insulating properties that retain warmth while allowing the skin to breathe. It is found in sweaters, cardigans, scarves, hats, and some coats.

Why we love it: Wool naturally regulates body temperature and provides a wonderfully soft feel that is especially appreciated in autumn and winter. It wrinkles very little and retains its warmth even in cold weather.
Things to keep in mind: It requires more delicate care: too high a temperature or an overly vigorous spin cycle can cause it to shrink or deform the fibers. Some wools may develop a few pills over time; this is a natural phenomenon.
Care: Air it out rather than washing it every time. When washing is necessary: use a "wool" or "delicate" cycle, cold or at a maximum of 30°C, with a limited spin cycle. Never hang a wet sweater : lay it flat to dry on a towel. Ironing is rarely necessary; if needed, use a low temperature with a protective cloth. For storage, always fold your sweaters: hanging them eventually stretches the shoulders.

Viscose

Viscose is appreciated for its fluid drape and soft feel. Made from plant-based cellulose, it naturally moves with the body. It can be found in dresses, blouses, shirts, skirts, and fluid trousers.

Why we love it: Very fluid and soft, it offers an elegant drape that naturally enhances the cuts, with excellent color retention and a lightweight feel.
Things to note: More delicate when wet, it can wrinkle easily and requires a little care when washing.
Care: Delicate cycle, maximum 30°C, moderate spin, use a laundry bag for delicate items, and turn the garment inside out. Air-dry only (never use a tumble dryer), on a hanger or flat. Iron at a low to medium temperature, inside out or using steam.

Elastane

Elastane is a synthetic fiber used in very small quantities, usually blended with cotton, viscose, or polyester. Its role is to add flexibility and improve comfort.

Why we love it: Highly stretchy, it allows clothing to follow the body's movements without losing its shape, considerably improving everyday comfort.
Things to keep in mind: It does not handle very high temperatures well, which can gradually reduce its elasticity.
Care: Wash at 30°C on a regular or delicate cycle, depending on the other material, with a moderate spin. Air-drying is recommended to preserve its elasticity. Iron at a low temperature if necessary. Garments often naturally regain their shape after drying.

Cotton

Cotton is one of the best-known materials in ready-to-wear fashion. Made from a plant-based fiber, it features in many Hello Moon garments: T-shirts, shirts, blouses, trousers, dresses, and sweaters.

Why we love it: Breathable, soft, and comfortable for everyday wear, it works well in every season and can offer a lightweight or more structured finish depending on its weave.
Things to keep in mind: It may shrink slightly during the first washes if the temperature is too high, and it tends to wrinkle more than some synthetic materials.
Care: Wash at 30°C or 40°C according to the care label, sorting colors and turning printed garments inside out. Air-dry or tumble-dry if the label allows it. Iron at a medium to high temperature; ironing is easier when the fabric is still slightly damp.

Silk

Silk is renowned for its softness, lightness, and elegance. Its delicate feel and subtle sheen make it a particularly popular fiber for refined pieces, even when used in small amounts.

Why we love it: Very soft and lightweight, it offers an elegant drape that enhances the cuts, with a natural ability to regulate temperature.
Things to keep in mind: It is a delicate material that does not tolerate friction or high temperatures well; some pieces require professional cleaning.
Care: Hand wash or use a very delicate cycle, with cold to lukewarm water and detergent suitable for delicate fabrics. Air-dry only, flat or on a hanger, away from direct sunlight. Iron at a very low temperature, on the reverse side, preferably with steam.

Suede

Things to note: Sensitive to moisture and stains, it requires specific care to preserve its original appearance.
Care: Never machine-wash it: use a suitable brush to remove dust and a specific product in case of stains. Allow it to air-dry naturally, away from any direct heat source. Brush it regularly and apply a waterproofing spray to protect it; store it in a dry place.

Straw

Things to keep in mind: It is sensitive to prolonged moisture and significant deformation, so it requires a little care when stored.
Care: A soft cloth or small brush is enough to remove dust. Avoid soaking it. If it gets damp, allow it to air-dry naturally in a well-ventilated place. Store it in a dry place, without stacking heavy objects on the hats.

Leather

Things to keep in mind: It benefits from regular care: without proper maintenance, it can dry out or lose its suppleness. Prolonged exposure to moisture should also be avoided.
Care: Clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and apply a product specially designed for leather for more thorough care. If it gets damp, let it dry naturally, never near a heat source. Store in a dry place away from sunlight. Remember to lightly stuff bags so they retain their shape.

Jeans (denim)

Jeans, also known as denim, are an essential part of every woman’s wardrobe. Appreciated for their durability and timeless style, they transcend the seasons without ever going out of fashion. Depending on its composition, denim can be 100% cotton for an authentic look or contain a touch of elastane for greater comfort.

Why we love it: Durable, long-lasting and timeless, denim naturally develops its own character over time and pairs easily with every other piece in your wardrobe, whatever the season.
Things to note: Denim may loosen slightly after several hours of wear, especially when it contains elastane. Dark jeans may also bleed during the first few washes, so wash them separately at first.
Care: Wash inside out at 30°C with a mild detergent, avoiding overly frequent washing to preserve the color. Air-dry whenever possible (the tumble dryer can cause them to shrink and accelerate fiber wear). Ironing is optional; if needed, iron inside out at a medium temperature. Store folded or hanging, always completely dry.

Care: Wash on a delicate cycle at 30°C, using a moderate spin speed and mild detergent. Air-dry by removing the garment from the machine promptly to limit creasing (avoid tumble-drying). It is even easier to iron while still slightly damp, at a high temperature suitable for this fibre. Store it when completely dry, folded or hanging, away from moisture.

Things to keep in mind: They require a little extra care: heavy friction or certain washing methods can damage them or cause them to come loose.
Care: When permitted by the care label, hand wash or use a very delicate cycle at a low temperature, with the garment turned inside out and a laundry bag if needed. Lay flat or hang to dry; never tumble dry. Never iron directly over the sequins. If needed, iron the inside of the garment with a pressing cloth. Store on a hanger or fold carefully, avoiding friction with other garments.

Why we love it: Natural, soft, and breathable, it is very comfortable to wear, even in hot weather. Its naturally crinkled appearance generally requires no ironing, creating a style that is both relaxed and elegant.
Things to keep in mind: This is a delicate fabric that benefits from gentle washing. Its slightly crinkled appearance is part of its identity — there is no need to try to achieve a perfectly smooth fabric.
Care: Machine wash at 30°C on a delicate cycle, using mild detergent and a moderate spin speed (avoid high temperatures, which can weaken the fibers). Air-dry by hanging the garment up as soon as the wash cycle ends so it retains its shape (the tumble dryer may cause it to shrink slightly and affect its softness). Ironing is generally unnecessary; if needed, use a low temperature with a little steam. Store it when completely dry, folded or hanging depending on the cut, without compressing it too much to preserve its volume.

Taking good care of your clothes every day

Beyond the specific characteristics of each fabric, a few general habits can make a real difference:

Before washing: sort colors, turn garments inside out, fasten buttons and zippers, use a mesh bag for delicate items, and do not overload the drum. Clothes should be able to move freely.

Temperature: 30°C is sufficient in most cases for everyday clothing, while better preserving colors and fabrics. Follow the care label whenever it specifies a particular temperature.

Drying: opt for air-drying, preferably in the shade rather than in direct sunlight. Hang structured pieces (shirts, dresses) and lay knitwear flat to dry. Use the tumble dryer sparingly, and only if the care label allows it.

Ironing: always check the care label before turning on the iron, iron colored or delicate items inside out, and use steam to reduce pressure on the fibers.

Storage: fold knitwear (hanging it stretches the shoulders), hang structured pieces on a suitable hanger, never put away a damp garment, and let your wardrobe breathe without compressing items too tightly together.

Air garments out instead of washing them every time: a sweater, blazer, or coat does not need to be washed after every wear. Airing it out for a few hours is often enough to help preserve it.
